Halfway to a Family of Five

Somehow we have reached the halfway point of this pregnancy, and I am not sure how we arrived here. Perhaps that is the beauty of a surprise pregnancy, one that was not inherently planned for yet still beloved and joy-filled. For me, my plans were interrupted abruptly, so I think for the past few months I have had to consistently remind myself that, “Oh yes, another baby will be here by then.” and I must pivot my thoughts yet again. I suppose that is becoming what life is all about, pivoting. New obstacles and challenges arise, not always in a bad way, that change your pace or even your plans entirely.

For instance, I don’t think our little dream of a restaurant will be happening any time soon. While that makes me sad, I am happy so happy, too. Around the same time, another incredible opportunity came out of thin air, and it felt like fate in many ways was opening another path to follow. I sadly cannot share what that path is for another year (perhaps you can make a guess!), I think many of you will understand why The Prairie Kitchen has been placed on the back burner.

Truly, I am rather excited for the year ahead. This will be my third year bringing in an income for our family solely through content creation, and I have this blog to thank for that. I always feel that this time of year is one where I spend time remembering all that has grown and changed with Under A Tin Roof. It is truly a time of reflection in many ways, and a time to prepare for the months ahead and make plans. I can remember being about 12 or 13-years-old and asking my parents if they thought I could be a blogger when I was older. They also talk about this often because they thought it was absolutely ridiculous! Like the wonderful parents that they are, they did not let me know that and told me that if I really wanted to, I could make it happen. Well, I did! It only took nearly a decade, ha!

In my mind, the creations can only continue to become better than they were, and that makes me hopeful. Here we will continue to share a love of seasonal and simple lifestyle, old-fashioned skills and hobbies, and lots and lots of food from seed to table. And, of course, another sweet baby will be mixed into the story!

Winter has arrived yet again on the homestead. For now, it sleeps and we rest and dream of what we will build in the spring. All of the wood that we cut over the warmer months is now drying out for summer bonfires. I have big plans of learning to cook over open flame and spit roast some of the chickens we’ll raise and butcher this year. I read somewhere that rotisserie style meat is the best way to cook it, and I think that sounds like a fun new cooking style to try.

As we prepare to become a family with three children, it all still feels a bit like a faded memory. I do not wonder or worry as much what it will be like with another child; I spent a lot of time dwelling on that with Dean’s pregnancy. Rather now, I wonder what it will be like to raise a little girl and to have a summer baby. A baby born in each season.

To rest and to wait, to lay asleep and dream like the dormant roots underground as they wait for their time to bloom. All together, it has all been quite peaceful, and as always I embrace change and a good pivot as we move forward on this journey we share.

What pivots have you had to make to welcome in the new year?

xoxo Kayla
