Ball® Cinnamon Pears in Apple Juice

I do not often get to can pears, but I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Iowa’s pear crop was having a good year! I have been able to pick both peaches and pears, which is a feat in itself. Because our winters are too cold, most fruit trees cannot handle the frost damage on their buds. It has been so nice the past two years getting to can peaches and now pears!

I was so happy to find this recipe for Ball® Cinnamon Pears in Apple Juice as a quick method to preserve this special crop. All you need is some pears, cinnamon sticks, and unsweetened apple juice to save some yourself.

ingredients & recipe:

MAKES ABOUT 1 PINT JAR PER LB OF PEARS

  • 1-1.5 lbs of pears, peeled, cored, and halved (per pint)

  • 1 cinnamon stick, per pint (I broke mine in half)

  • unsweetened apple juice

DIRECTIONS:

  • Prepare your boiling water bath canner. Simmer pint jars in water until ready for use. Wash lids in warm soapy water and set aside.

  • Place the pear halves in a medium pot with water and bring to a boil. Lower to a simmer until ready to use. Bring the apple juice to a boil.

  • Pack hot pears, cavity side down, into a hot jar leaving 1/2 inch headspace. Place 1 cinnamon stick in each jar; mine were too long so I had to break them in half.

  • Ladle hot apple juice over pears, leaving 1/2 inch headspace. Remove air bubbles, wipe rim, place lid on jar and screw on band until fingertip tight.

  • Process jars for 20 minutes. Turn off heat, remove canner lid, and let jars sit in hot water for 5 minutes. Remove jars and check seals after 12-24 hours.

This recipe is a little different than others I have shared in the past because it only gives you the measurements for one jar. While I would not necessarily recommend filling an entire canning pot for one jar,. it is nice to know exactly how much it takes for each individual portion! I wish more canning recipes would give smaller measurements. Sometimes I do not have 10 pounds of green beans to work with, only 4 or 5! What do you think? Do you like this recipe?
