Keep Flies Away with Lemon and Cloves!

Keep Flies Away with Lemon and Cloves!

It's no surprise that living out in the country, surrounded by hog farms and grain, means we have an abundance of flies. They are everywhere! And they can really ruin your day or evening, especially at a dinner party. I have been diffusing lemon and clove essential oil in the farmhouse for a while now trying to keep the little boogers away. I have to say that it works really well!

Flies are entirely uninterested in the scent of cloves and citrus. Did you know that combining the two makes a pretty powerful impact on the dreaded housefly? Keeping a pot of mint near your doorway is a pretty good way to do that as well. Any herb that gives off a strong aroma is generally not liked by most insects. Apparently lemon and cloves are a great repellent for mosquitoes as well!

I love diffusing essential oils! They are such a convenience during the day, especially for when you are feeling weary or unmotivated, have a headache, or seasonal allergies. I am telling you - seasonal allergies are no match for my diffuser! But I generally cannot diffuse outside, and I don't really like to. The flies here love when we have a cookout. Trying to keep them off of the watermelon and corn is a nightmare! It just truly ruins your entire night.

But we found a great solution! While the essential oils are great inside, why not use whole lemon and cloves outside? I honestly didn't think it would work all that well, but to my surprise it was an insanely good idea.

You simply slice a lemon in half (I like lengthwise for a table setting) and stuff the inside with cloves. If you want you could stick them in with a pattern; I smash them in gently with my finger in a large lump. I want powerhouse cloves! Set it in the center of your table and enjoy your meal.

You can use any type of citrus fruit: lemons, oranges, limes. It really doesn't matter. You just want something strong. I was entirely shocked to see that no flies bothered us as we sat around the table, or the lemons if you like. I was so impressed with this little trick that I placed a handful of "lemon clove candles" into the chicken coop and garden shed area (where the flies are abundant) and even by the kitten food.

Gone! Goodbye, flies! I could not believe it.

I thought that this was a fun summer hack for your next picnic or backyard barbecue. I hope it works as well for you as it did for me!

xoxo Kayla
