Cayenne Salve for Sore Muscles

Cayenne Salve for Sore Muscles

Working out in the field, especially during the initial spring days when my body has spent the past handful of months happily stuffing my belly with preserves and buttered bread while sitting unapologetically on the couch, always leads to sore muscles. In high school I was obsessed with icy-hot used after a workout or spots practice. While I have not used that product in years, I figured there had to be a way to create something similar at home.

Cayenne pepper has incredible healing properties that relieve pain when applied topically. It creates a warmth in the body when paired with ginger, which is anti-inflammatory. Combined with rosemary which is anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anti-spasmodic and peppermint which cools and relieve pain in the muscles this makes a wonderful solution to your aches and pain. Apply this salve topically to the parts of your body that are sore, such as your back or legs. You will instantly feel the relief!

Ingredients + Recipe |

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil

  • 2 tbsp beeswax

  • 1/4 cup peppermint infused oil

  • 1/4 cup shea butter

  • 2 tbsp cayenne pepper powder

  • 1 tbsp ginger powder

  • 20 drops peppermint essential oil

  • 20 drops rosemary essential oil

  1. In a double boiler or makeshift version, heat the coconut oil and peppermint infused oil (you can use a different carrier oil if you don’t have this on hand). Stir until well combined and melted completely.

  2. Meanwhile, place the cayenne powder and ginger powder into a small muslin bag and tie shut. Place this in the melted oils and shea butter. Heat over low heat for 30 minutes to allow the spices to infuse into the oils.

  3. Remove the muslin spice bag. With either a potato ricer or other device, squeeze as much of the oil as possible out of the fabric and back into the double boiler. Discard the herbs and clean the bag later.

  4. Add the beeswax and shea butter. Remove from heat and add the essential oils.

  5. Pour into your containers of choice (I always use little tins) and label accordingly. Allow to cool completely before putting a lid on the containers. Use as needed on your aching muscles such as your back, stomach, legs, arms, etc. Should keep for 8 to 12 months at room temperature.

Enjoy the healing benefits of easily acquired herbs and household items! I use doTERRA’s essential oils, which are 100% pure and extremely potent. If you are looking to get a discount on those oils, you can click here and become a wholesale member. This is anywhere from 15-50% off all of doTERRA’s products. It’s a really amazing company that I fully support. I am the worst at selling essential oils, so don’t feel pressured to sign up but I highly recommend trying out their oils at least once.

Remember, I am not a professional herbalist nor am I doctor. This is purely a hobby and based on my own personal experiences! Always consult with your doctor or medical professional before using herbs to heal your body, or use at your own risk. Enjoy!
