Body Butter Three Ways

Body Butter Three Ways

With winter comes dry skin. I wanted to move away from an oily salve and get into something that was creamy and light like lotion but without the hassle of using water. Making a DIY bath and beauty recipe with water scares me! The shelf life becomes unstable and can bring in unwanted bacteria. While it is typically pretty safe, I like using oil based recipes much more. What I did not realize was that body butter was made entirely of whipped oils. Did you know? It’s super easy to make and to store as well! This body butter recipe will last as long as the shortest expiration date on your oils. This is usually for about the length of a year.

Body Butter Base Ingredients + Recipe |

  • 1/2 cup cocoa butter

  • 1/2 cup shea butter

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil

  • 1/2 cup olive oil

  1. In a double boiler, heat the cocoa butter, shea butter, coconut oil, and olive oil. Stir to combine. If you do not have a double boiler, you can create a makeshift one with a small pan or glass bowl over a pot of boiling water.

  2. Once everything is fully melted and combined, place in the fridge for one hour or until firm.

  3. With a hand mixer, whip the oils on high until they are creamy and fluffy, like pictured. Once this is finished, you can add your different essential oils and flavored ingredients.

  4. Spoon the body butter into glass jars or tins. You can store this body butter at room temperature if kept sealed and it should last you anywhere from 8 to 12 months. If your house is kept warm, it may melt. If this happens, just place back in the fridge until it hardens and re-whip as you did before.

Rosemary Lemon Body Butter

  • 1/2 cup cocoa butter

  • 1/2 cup shea butter

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil

  • 1/2 cup olive oil

  • 20 drops rosemary essential oil

  • 20 drops lemon essential oil

  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

Make recipe as above and add in the essential oils and vanilla when the body butter is ready to be whipped. This scent smells absolutely delicious - my favorite! Fresh, clean, and sweet.

Each of these flavors turned into something warm and sweet smelling with vanilla extract. I think I always enjoy smelling like a dessert when it comes to fragrance scents over something floral or musky. What about you? What scent do you usually go for when it comes to body care?

Christmas may be over, but this body butter makes a great gift for someone special. That might just have to be yourself! (:
