You can tell that the summer season is almost at a close. We took a trip the Amish greenhouse that's right down the road from us to check out the prices on some apple trees for our kitchen garden. The entire indoor greenhouse, which is extremely large, was empty! Only a few little succulents remained inside, most of them moved outside, begging to be purchased. The outdoor greenhouse, where the remaining flowers, shrubs, ground covers, and a few trees were kept was nice and full. Autumn is near! Hooray! Remember how I said that I hate summer? I still do. Bring on the cool weather, please! Speaking of autumn, in case you missed it, we released our new collection Gnomes + Toadstools yesterday! You can see some of our catalog photos here and shop here.
Again, we were shocked by the affordable prices of the fruit trees here! I'm not sure what we were expecting, but a young tree with fully matured apples already growing on it for under $50 was not it! Let's just say we will be having quite a few fruit trees on our property for next fall!! I am so excited for our kitchen garden. With everything that has been going on lately, I know that I can always turn to my plants to feel a little bit sane. I feel like I say this all of the time, maybe it's just to myself, but we have been so overwhelmed with positivity from the release of this new collection, from new readers and followers. It's strange and wonderful seeing everything come together, continually growing! My close friend was just telling me how she felt like this school year was her time to be a "boss lady" and I could not help but feel the same. 2016 has been so, so good to me so far! These opportunities are incredible; looking forward to moving ahead.
We got him to wear the bonnet for one shot! Oh boy, this child. So, so opinionated lately about his clothing, and he hates all of our products. I am assuming it's because he knows that when we put them on him that means he has to be good and take a couple of photos. The bloomers, he can handle, but the bonnets are a no-go as of late. Only the straw hat is fine enough for the little prince's head! Hahaha!! That's okay. He's been such a good boy lately. Two colds within a month, and he still acts like nothing is wrong. Raise 'em up strong! Sigmund the bear also goes with us everywhere now.
I've been finding myself looking to poetry for some quiet time lately. I am not a huge fan of poetry, to be honest. Novels usually do the trick for me, as I find poets whiny and a bit overdramatic. There's not been a lot of time for books, though, so I try to sneak in a couple poems in the evening to get my brain working. I found one I really love in Billy Collin's Aimless Love called Genius. It's really lovely! There's an stanza that goes, "But earlier this week on a wooded path, / I thought the swans afloat on the reservoir / were the true geniuses, / the ones who had figured out how to fly, / how to be both beautiful and brutal, / and how to mate for life."
I just loved that! There are so many lessons that nature can teach us, and what better way to gather knowledge than from the beautiful things that surround us? I can't seem to find any other way!
We purchased a new succulent baby before we left. I couldn't leave this one behind! Also, isn't this wood watch incredible?! JORD was kind enough to contact me and offer to send one of their gorgeous watches for me to keep. I was stunned and honored! It's made with zebrawood and maple and looks great with everything in my closet - I can get down with this accessory. I hardly ever wear jewelry, and this makes me still feel neutral and not too dressed up. While I was out and about, someone mentioned what a unique watch it was, and I had to agree - I've never really seen any watch quite like it!
Because JORD is so awesome, they're offering a spectacular giveaway exclusively through Under A Tin Roof! How amazing is that?
